Happy solstice! How is everyone doing? We got the first batch of tomatoes this week from John Givens farm and we are so thrilled about them. Some of you added his beautiful beef steak tomatoes to your box and next week I’m excited to add his heirlooms. Heirlooms seem to be an all around favorite.

I am excited to share one of my dad’s favorite dishes; his famous cucumber salad. My dad, Tom Shepherd, is a simple cook but always loaded with flavor. I swear he could get away with making most of his meals with these ingredients: garlic, lemons, vinegar (a few styles), and salt & pepper. He’ll use these ingredients for quite a few dishes like bean salad, green salad, carrot salad but my favorite is his cucumber salad. I can remember eating this when I was just a young girl. I don’t think it was my favorite back then but I can’t get enough of the vinegary flavor now. I highly recommend giving this a try! Oh and I don’t want to forget this incredible recipe notes from Tom, “Great on a warm day.”

Tom’s Cucumber Salad Recipe:


1 lb cucumbers, sliced and quartered

2-3 cloves garlic, minced

lemon juice of half a lemon

1/2 cup feta cheese

1 small red onion diced

1/4 cup red wine vinegar


  1. Toss all ingredients together and serve room temperature or chilled.

Guys we’re so happy about offering a new pickup spot in San Roque area. Pizza Guru! Pizza Guru is an insanely awesome pizza spot on upper state street that not only has good pizza but they focus on ingredients from local farms and artisans. It’s absolutely one of my favorite places to eat at when I am up in SB. So if you’d like, you can pick up your box there. Also, GetHooked also has a pick up at Pizza Guru on Tuesdays…. They are basically a csa for local fisherman that is caught in the channel. You could pick up your veggies, fresh bread, fish,& pizza all in one place. I think we’re onto something!
